AI-assisted voter intimidation uses fabricated threats or apparent authority to make people afraid to participate in an election.
Understanding the concern
This differs from simply giving wrong information about a deadline. Intimidation aims to create fear: a message may falsely imply that voters will be watched, punished or confronted. Generated voices and images can make such threats seem to come from an official or organized group.
The possibility deserves planning without assuming that every threatening message is AI-made. Election authorities need clear ways for people to report threats and verify suspicious announcements. Responses should avoid repeating the threatening content more widely than necessary, which can amplify the intimidation even while trying to debunk it.
