Pathology edge-case errors occur when an AI system misreads an unusual tissue sample, such as a rare cancer type or an uncommon appearance of a common disease.
Understanding the concern
Pathologists examine tissue taken during a biopsy or surgery. AI can help find patterns in these detailed images, but rare cases provide fewer examples to learn from. A system may force an unfamiliar sample into a familiar category instead of recognizing that specialist review is needed.
Large pathology models have shown promising results on both common and rare cancers. That progress makes careful testing more important, not less. A high overall score can hide weak performance on a small group. Like a bird guide that covers common species well, the system must also help its user notice when the specimen does not fit the guide.

Invite people to describe what happened in their own words. Repeat back what you understood and let them correct it. A quiet person or a complaint that is hard to measure may still reveal something important.
